Grammy Award untuk Rekaman Tahun Ini dipersembahkan oleh National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States untuk "menghormati pencapaian artistik, kemahiran teknis, dan keunggulan menyeluruh dalam industri rekaman, tanpa memperhatikan penjualan atau posisi tangga lagu."[1][2] Penghargaan Record of the Year adalah salah satu dari empat kategori "General Field" di penghargaan tersebut (bersama Artis Baru Terbaik, Lagu Tahun Ini dan Album Tahun Ini) dipersembahkan setiap tahun sejak Penghargaan Grammy Tahunan ke-1 pada tahun 1959.

Untuk singel yang dirilis secara komersial atau trek rekaman vokal atau instrumental baru. Lagu dari album tahun sebelumnya boleh dimasukkan dengan syarat lagu tersebut tidak dimasukkan pada tahun sebelumnya dan album tersebut tidak memenangkan Grammy. Penghargaan kepada seniman, produser, teknisi rekaman dan/atau mixer jika bukan seniman.[3]

Pengaransemen, penulis lagu, musisi, dan penyanyi latar dari rekaman pemenang dapat mengajukan Sertifikat Pemenang.[4] Songwriters can only apply for a certificate if it is a new song.

Sejak Penghargaan Grammy Tahunan ke-55 pada tahun 2013, teknisi mastering dianggap sebagai nominasi dan penerima penghargaan dalam kategori ini.[5]

Walaupun "rekaman" sering merujuk pada rekaman musik apa pun, Record of the Year berbeda dengan Song of the Year atau Album of the Year:

  • Rekaman Tahun Ini diberikan untuk satu singel atau satu lagu dari sebuah album. Penghargaan ini diberikan kepada artis yang tampil, produser, teknisi rekaman dan/atau mixer untuk lagu tersebut. Dalam pengertian ini, "rekaman" berarti lagu rekaman tertentu, bukan komposisinya atau album lagu.
  • Lagu Tahun Ini juga diberikan untuk satu lagu atau satu lagu saja, namun penerima penghargaan ini adalah penulis lagu yang benar-benar menulis lirik dan/atau melodi lagu tersebut. "Lagu" dalam konteks ini berarti lagu sebagaimana yang dikomposisi, bukan rekamannya.
  • Album of the Year diberikan untuk keseluruhan album, dan penghargaan diberikan kepada artis, penulis lagu, produser, teknisi rekaman, dan teknisi mastering untuk album tersebut. Dalam konteks ini, "album" berarti kumpulan lagu yang direkam (LP multi-track, CD, atau paket unduhan), bukan lagu-lagu individual atau komposisinya.
