Leopold von Ranke (Jerman: [fɔn ˈʁaŋkə]; 21 Desember 1795 – 23 Mei 1886) adalah sejarawan Jerman dan pendiri aliran sejarah modern yang berbasis pada naskah sumber.[3][4] Menurut Caroline Hoefferle, "Ranke mungkin sejarawan paling penting untuk membentuk profesi sejarah seperti yang muncul di Eropa dan Amerika Serikat pada akhir abad ke-19 ".[5] Dia mampu menerapkan metode pengajaran seminar di kelasnya dan berfokus pada penelitian arsip dan analisis dokumen sejarah. Membangun metode di Sekolah Sejarah Göttingen,[6] Ranke menetapkan standar untuk banyak penulisan sejarah, memperkenalkan ide-ide seperti mengandalkan sumber primer (empirisme)), penekanan pada sejarah naratif dan terutama politik internasional (Außenpolitik, sejarah politik).
