Pada 1 Mei 1960, sebuah pesawat mata-mata U-2 Amerika Serikat ditembak jatuh oleh Pasukan Pertahanan Udara Soviet saat melakukan fotografi udara di teritorial Soviet. Diterbangkan oleh pilot Francis Gary Powers, pesawat tersebut dihantam oleh sebuah misil permukaan udara S-75 Dvina (SA-2 Guideline) dan jatuh di dekat Sverdlovsk (sekarang Yekaterinburg). Powers berparasut dengan selamat dan ditangkap.
