Sebagai catatan, bagi agama Buddha arus utama, baik itu aliran Theravāda, Mahāyāna, dan Vajrayāna, Ikuanisme ini tidak secara internasional diakui sebagai bagian dari agama Buddha.

Pada artikel ini, dapat dilihat bahwa tone penulisan sebelumnya berusaha menafikan fakta ini dengan meng-highlight resminya agama ini di bawah naungan Perwakilan Umat Buddha Indonesia (WALUBI).

Saat bagian pembicaraan ini ditulis. masih banyak kontroversi, baik di dunia nyata maupun dunia maya (media sosial dan lain-lain) terkait pengakuan Ikuanisme sebagai bagian dari agama Buddha di Indonesia, mengingat di Taiwan, agama ini berdiri sendiri dan terpisah dari agama Buddha.

Selain itu, agama ini secara masif membangun sekolah, tempat ibadah, dan universitas berukuran besar dengan label "Buddha Maitreya". Dalam Buddhisme arus utama, Maitreya masih Bodhisatwa dan belum jadi "Buddha".
