Rombongan Norwegia pimpinan Amundsen berada di Kutub Selatan, 17 Desember 1911. Mereka mencapai 90°S dua hari sebelumnya.

Selatan Terjauh adalah lintang paling selatan yang dicapai oleh para penjelajah sebelum penaklukan Kutub Selatan pada 1911. Langkah signifikan pada jalan menuju kutub adalah penemuan daratan selatan Tanjung Tanduk pada 1619, perlintasan Kapten James Cook ke Lingkar Antarktika pada 1773, dan penglihatan terkonfirmasi terawal dari daratan utama Antarktika pada 1820.
